Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the basic characteristics of medicaments application during farrowing and in the early postpartum period and their relationship to the selected parameters of sows. The primary records of the farmer in 2018 and related data from the database of performance testing were used as the information sources. The amount and type of drugs, and the necessity of repeated application were considered here. All medicaments were prescribed by the veterinary and injected intramuscularly. Production and reproductive parameters of sows were in the accordance with the level achieved by the nucleus herds included in national program – CzePig. A total of 2.19 applications were recorded per litter: one containing the oxytocinum during farrowing and 1.19 applications in the postpartum period (treatment of infectious diseases, analgesic drugs and preventive and supportive treatments). In sire breeds the slightly higher medicines application (+ 11%, i.e. +0.24 applications per litter) was found compared to dam breeds. The most treated were sows on the first litter (3.05 applications in total), then the need for treatment dropped (by about half) and increased to the maximum at the last litter (3.5 applications per litter). Medicine consumption per sow and litter gradually decreased over the year from 2.30 to 1.93 applications. When the need of sow treatment increased by one application per litter: the postnatal losses raised by 0.1 piglets per litter and after the piglets weaning the insemination delay by 0.4 days, farrowing interval extended by 1.4 days, and the productive lifetime of sows was reduced by 51 days on average.
