Abstract

The text mainly discusses the problematic of breeding of dairy cattle under the conditions of welfare and breeding comfort. First, the authors present an overview of different ways of cattle housing technologies in the Czech Republic throughout different stages of cattle’s life. Next, to ensure the comprehensiveness of the book, the authors have included several main chapters covering the following issues: Basic physiological characteristics of the animal, including the specification of cold and heat stress in cattle; Professional terminology of cattle housing; Cattle behavior, including examples of abnormal behavior; and finally conditions of welfare in dairy cattle breeding. Furthermore, the book discusses current knowledge about optimizing the nurturing conditions, including the stall space, lighting in feed alleys, resting area, waiting rooms and in milking parlours. In the chapter “Feeding techniques” the authors discuss the details of management for colostrum calf feeding and infant milk replacers, including the issue of pasteurization of waste and raw milk with the use of techniques for preparing milk beverages (dosing, temperature maintenance, homogenization) and briefly describes the technique of preparing total mixed ration (TMR). From a technological perspective, the authors list the requirements for the feeding table, manger wall and step in front of manger wall. A special section is devoted to the types of floors and floor requirements in stables and the problematic of bedding materials (dimensional parameters, design, the importance of individual parts, type of beddings including the possibility of alkalization etc.). Moreover, considerable attention is paid to technological elements of milking conditions for the optimal choice of milking parlours. A special attention is paid to the issue of the low-cost and effective stable construction, including various examples (e.g. circular stables for large herds, compost bedded barns for dairy cows etc.).
