Abstract | The incidence of clinical mastitis is currently the only direct indicator of health defined in the breeding goal of the Holstein breed. The somatic cells content along with the linear scoring of udder and foots are used in the selection index as indirect health indicators. Knowledge of economic impact and breeding values of these traits is an important condition for breeding. The system of routine collection of health traits is an important basis for genetic evaluation and improvement of these traits. The current selection has an indirect effect, for example, on the reduction of the incidence of the disease, nevertheless the direct selection would lead to a higher selection response and better phenotype – a lower frequency of disease and thus lower economic losses in the farm. |
