Genetic improvement of dairy cattle was focused on productive traits for decades, which has led to deterioration in functional traits, mainly fertility, disease resistance and longevity. Intensive selection for milk production has negative effect on reproduction and health, as highly productive cows often suffer from longer negative energy balance after delivery. The selection on production should not cease but selection index should balance production with fertility and health to counteract the negative genetic correlations among them.
