Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the publication of health index of cows created for the local population of the Holstein breed. Estimated breeding values (BV) of health and the resulting health index of cows have recently become part of the routine reports of cows published by PLEMDAT, Ltd. Calculation is based on the registration of diseases throught the diary of treatments or the electronic data transmission. The number of cows and heifers for which the index is calculated is gradually increasing. Since the beginning of the year the increase by 24% has been recorded (from almost 55,000 to 68,000 females). The selection index for cow health is a practical result of the current development in the field of breeding the domestic population of dairy cattle. It allows direct selection for udder and claw health. Similar to the current SIH index, the health index is fitted to the local dairy cattle population with full respect for both production and economic parameters of farms. It is constructed on a similar principle as the sub-indices included in the current SIH index. It is published in animals even when BV for one health trait are estimated. The health index is flexible, it can be further expanded and modified as needed.
