Abstract

For the effective prevention and treatment of mastitis, it is necessary to know the current situation and the development of the health of the mammary gland. A reliable indicator of the health status of the mammary gland generally the somatic cells count of in the milk. The EU and Czech limit for raw cow’s milk is 400 thousand in 1 ml and the border between healthy and endangered mammary glands is between 100 and 150 thousand ml of milk. According to 16 authors from different countries, clinical mastitis occurred on average in one third of the herd cows, the incidence of subclinical inflammation of the mammary gland is significantly greater. The main production loss caused by clinical mastitis is a reduction in the volume of milk sold by an average of 550 liters. The second major production loss is usually a higher herd turnover rate due to the disease. The economic losses caused by mastitis are lower yields and higher costs for milk production. Based on literary data and its own calculations, the economic loss for one incidence of clinical mastitis is estimated at CZK 9,000 for the conditions of the Czech Republic. Subclinical and clinical mastitis, with varying intensity, occurs almost without exception in all herds. Therefore, prevention and therapy should be a regular and permanent part of herd management.
