Abstract

Economic losses caused by mastitis represent in comparison with healthy cows lower yields (revenues) and higher cost of producing milk. Based on literature data and own calculations, the economic loss to one incidence of clinical mastitis was estimated for the conditions of the Czech Republic for 9000 CZK. At that involved approximately 53 % lower revenues from the sale of milk, 20 % higher culling (replacement herd) cows, 14% of the cost of medication and treatment cows, 7 % of the work on the treatment of sick cows and 6 % deduction from the purchase price of milk. As a result of various factors (number and intensity of disease, performance of cows, the cost of breeding cows, milk prices etc.) can losses caused by mastitis fluctuate between 4000 and 18 000 CZK. If, in the Czech Republic clinical mastitis sickened 35% (130 thousand) of the current state of 373 thousand dairy cows, the total economic loss caused by clinical mastitis reach approximately 1.2 billion CZK (1170 milion CZK) per year. The loss of CZK 9000 per cow with mastitis and 3140 CZK per cow from the herd corresponds with the current milk price (CZK 9.50) with sales of 950 and 330 liters of milk.lncrease the proportion of cows with mastitis by 1% in the Czech Republic would increase economic loss of about 38.5 million CZK further. Due to the generalized occurrence of mastitis in cows in order to reduce the economic losses should be prevention and therapy of reproduction diseases become a regular part of the herd management.
