Abstract

In 2013 in the world bred 1.5 billion of cattle and produced the 64.3 million tons of beef (20.5 % of total meat production). Between 2004 and 2014 in the EU-28 reduced the number of cattle on 2,352 thousand and 2.6 %, while beef production decreased by 780 thousand tons and 9.3 %. In the Czech Republic in the same period the number of cattle decreased by 21 thousand and 1.5%. Reduction number of dairy cows (about 61 thousand and 14%) was more than compensated by increasing the number of suckler cow (about 68 thousand and 50 %). Yet beef production in the Czech Republic decreased by 39%. One of the reasons for this is the growth in exports of live cattle associated with higher farm prices abroad. In 2013 one person consumed in EU respectively in Czech Republic 10.5, respectively 7.5 kg of beef. Identified indicators point to a clearly lower intensity beef production in EU-13 than in EU-15.
