Abstract

The Yearbook of Cattle Breeding summarizes the main events and results in cattle breeding in the Czech Republic in 2019 and trends in this sector in recent years. From 2015 to 2019, according to preliminary data, growth in agricultural production was recorded. In this period, according to the agricultural account, animal production and milk production growth by 2.0, respectively 4.1%. In contrast, cattle production fell by 3.9% between these years. When evaluating the cattle breeding sector in the Czech Republic in 2019, it is clear that there were no significant changes year-on-year in terms of stocks of cattle, production and sale of milk and cattle for slaughter and consumption of milk and dairy products and beef. From the long-term development of indicators, it is certainly possible to evaluate positively the growth of the total volume of milk produced in the Czech Republic and the annual milk yield, which has long been one of the highest in our country in comparison with EU countries. On the other hand, the Czech Republic agrarian foreign trade has been characterized by a negative balance in recent years. An important part of agricultural exports are the commodities milk and cream and live cattle, and on the contrary, higher imports over exports in recent years have been in the Czech Republic for dairy products and beef. The cattle sector, like not only agricultural sectors, is highly dependent on economic performance. Without an adequate level of profitability, it is not possible from a long-term perspective to maintain current production and ensure permanent self-sufficiency in milk and beef production in the Czech Republic.
