Abstract

Suckler cows represent an important part of livestock production as confirmed by the rising status of this category in the Czech Republic. The economic aspect of cow-calf operations is important because reaching profitability is a prerequisite for maintaining and further expansion of herds. For the set of farms analyzed it was calculated that between 2013 and 2016 the average costs per cow and year was 30 313 CZK and the profitability ranged between +2.1 and +8.7. The profit was reached only when the subsidies accounting for 47 % of revenues were provided. The analysis confirmed the dependence of costs on the herd size. In addition, the impact of the number of calves born per 100 cows and the price of calves sold was also examined.
