Abstract | Entomophagy is the consumption of insects as part of human food. Insects in various stages of development were used in prehistoric times as a food ingredient in humans, and this trend continues even in modern times. Processing and use of insect in recent years becomes a subject of interest of some companies producing feeds for fish and poultry. Importance of insects for animal nutrition lies not only in its nutritional value, but also other properties. Insects are able to produce antimicrobial peptides. According to the results insects can be considered as a possible alternative feed for monogastric animals. Examining its effect on animal performance, finding the most suitable species or substrates for breeding is currently the hot topic of research. |
