Abstract

Proper nutrition and feeding of farm animals can largely affect the production potential of ruminants. Protein is essential nutrient in animal nutrition. It is very important to precisely predict input and usability of the individual protein fractions in the digestive tract of ruminants to ensure correct protein needs. The contribution of this paper is to clarify the importance of Cornell system which includes nutrition and digestion of ruminants in its entirety. This system takes into account the dynamics of the digestive tract of ruminants and requirements for nutrient composition of feeds and by this is possible to determine the individual nitrogen fractions. The determination of nitrogen fractions provides a broad view on intake and digestibility of feed ration for ruminants. These procedures help to determine the correct representation of feed nutrients, their ratio and concentration that closely match nutritional requirements of animals.
