On Thursday, 1st October, 2020, the ceremonial announcement of extraordinary results of research and development and the award ceremony within the traditional competition for ministerial prizes were held on the roof of the National Museum of Agriculture. Congratulations to Dr. Radko Loučka for winning the 1st place in the category Award of the Minister of Agriculture for the best implemented result of research and development and Dr. Gudrun Illmann for the appreciation by the Minister of Agriculture and the Chairman of Czech Academy of Agricultural Sciences for her outstanding research results. The awards were handed over by the Minister of Agriculture Dr. Miroslav Toman and the chairman of the Czech Academy of Agricultural Sciences Jan Nedělník, Ph.D.. The evaluation committee chose and the Minister of Agriculture approved the first three winners in each competition, and in addition, the Appreciation by the Minister of Agriculture and the Chairman of Czech Academy of Agricultural Sciences for good research results was awarded in each competition.

1st place in the category Award of the Minister of Agriculture for the best implemented result of research and development went to Dr. Radko Loučka., Institute of Animal Science, for the certified methodology guide „Measurement of silage losses“.

The guide presents new methods to increase the efficiency of silage production. Silage is the main component of ruminant diets and it is necessary to determine the real loss of dry matter or organic matter during the entire process of ensiling and storage, from field to feed bunk. Usually, the magnitude of shrinkage is only estimated, which is not enough. The guide details methods of measuring losses: 1. simple weighing and dry matter measurement, 2. burried bags technique, and 3. analysis of ash content.

The appreciation by the Minister of Agriculture and the Chairman of Czech Academy of Agricultural Sciences for good research results went to Dr. Gudrun Illmann, Institute of Animal Science, for the utility model „Farrowing pen for sows“.

The new farrowing pen enables easy and safe work to stockpeople and comfortable and safe movement of animals. Areas for piglets and the sow are separated. Piglets can run freely around the pen, which improves their welfare. The movement of the sow is limited to the necessary time.
