20th International Workshop Research in Pig Breeding 2024

In mid-October, the 20th edition of the international workshop Research in Pig Breeding took place. The event was organized by the Department of Ethology of the Institute of Animal Science in Kostelec nad Orlicí.
The workshop took place in the beautiful setting of the Pod rozhlednou guesthouse in the village of Vrbice near Kostelec nad Orlicí.
The participants included representatives from research organizations and universities from the Czech Republic, Germany, and Slovakia.The program was divided into two parts: a lecture segment and a poster session. During the presentations and in the form of posters, a wide range of topics in the field of pig farming were introduced, covering areas such as history, reproduction, animal hygiene, veterinary issues, technology, pig nutrition, and the relationship between pig farming and the environment. In the poster session, the contribution by Dominika Vojtěchová, Bc from Masaryk University Brno titled “Species determination of animal aDNA samples from archaeological sites” was rated as the best. Among the presentations, the highest-rated contribution was by Dr. Drahomíra Čtvrtlíková Knitlová, DVM, PhD from Mendel University in Brno, titled “Do farrowing crates affect the health of sows?”.
On the occasion of the 20th edition of the workshop, awards for long-term collaboration with the Department of Pig Breeding at the Institute of Animal Science were presented to representatives of Mendel University, the Czech University of Life Sciences, the University of South Bohemia, the University of Veterinary Sciences Brno, the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, and Anhalt University of Applied Sciences.
