Description | PIG PRODUCTION SYSTEMS Continuous improvement of pig breeding systems leads to finding solutions to issues in the breeding of pigs. We deal with issues of nutrition, technology and welfare of pigs with a focus on their application in the management of production and breeding farms. Part of the workplace is certified nucleic breeding of Přeštice black-pied pigs and the breeding of laboratory mini pigs. We provide consultancy for the breeder community and publish the Research in Pig Breeding scientific journal. We regularly organise the Research in Pig Breeding international workshop and participate in the organisation of the international symposium “Innovative research for the future of agriculture and rural development”. PIG REPRODUCTION We follow up on the tradition of the former Pig Research Institute. We organise insemination training courses (for the insemination and embryo transfer in sows in the trainees’ workplaces) and are involved in the programme for the conservation of genetic resources as a specialised workplace for the cryopreservation of semen and other biological material. CLASSIFICATION OF PIG CARCASSES The goal is to provide information about the composition and quality of pig carcasses in the final stages of production and commercialisation. We focus on monitoring the factors that affect the selected quantitative and qualitative indicators of the pig carcass value. The emphasis is mainly on the objective classification methods, their development and further application in the conditions of slaughterhouse operations in the Czech Republic. An important part of the activity is a close cooperation with the professional community – both with breeders and with processors. Regular specialised training courses are held under a mandate from the Ministry of Agriculture on the implementation of classification procedures for graders of pig carcases and for classification inspectors. The workplace is also a contact point under Article 20 of Council Regulation EC 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of slaughtering. |
