Abstract

The work presents the distribution of carbon footprint in the pig production from birth to slaughter, the contribution of pig production to global GHG emissions, the GHG emission sources in the global pig industry and the contributions of different breeding systems and different sources to the carbon footprint in pig production. The work also states and details main sources of GHG emissions in pork production, such as: transportation, feed production, pig production itself, respiration and gut fermentation, manure management, wastewater and harmless treatment, biosecurity, slaughtering and processing and energy for water treatment and wastewater management. In conclusion, the work also presents the mitigation strategies for carbon emission in pork production.
