Abstract

This study deals with development of the numbers of sheep and goats and their share in the use of permanent grassland in EU countries. In 2010, the EU bred nearly 100 million sheep and 12.5 million goats. The biggest breeders are Great Britain, Spain, Greece, Romania, France and Italy. Share of permanent grassland higher than 50% is reported in Ireland, Great Britain, Slovenia, Greece, Austria and Luxembourg. Relatively large differences in the share of permanent grassland to agricultural land exist between old and new EU member states. When load one hectare permanent grassland five small ruminants (sheep and goats) could be in the EU-15 and EU-12 to use around 38% and 21% of the total permanent grassland. The current common agricultural policy as well as its prepared reform supports increasing the acreage of permanent grassland politically and economically.
