Abstract

Ruminants and horses breeding is a traditional, ecological and reasonable way of utilisation of permanent grasslands (PG). The area of PG increased by nearly 100,000 ha in the period from 1990 to 2009 in the CR, the numbers of cattle, sheep and goat decreased by 61, 57 and 59 % respectively in the same period. The number of ruminants and horses in 2009 is estimated to 1,005,000 LU, which is by 1,472,000 LU and 59% less than the number of the same animals in 1990. Out of these about 45% (456,000 LU) utilise PG. This situation implies that breeding of above mentioned animals can manage about 460 or 680 thousand ha of PG with an average area allocated to one LU of 1.0 to 1.5 ha. That is 50 to 75% of the current area of PG in 2009 (925,000 ha). Considering medium to extreme risk of erosion on 71% of farmland, the proportion of PG should increase from current about 23% up to at least 40%, which is the level EU-15 countries.
