Abstract

This article presents the first systematic tool for selecting silage additives in the Czech Republic, developed by the Institute of Animal Science. The interactive software digitizes 30 years of expert knowledge into an algorithm that recommends optimal additives based on farmers‘ specific conditions. Of 155 available additives on the Czech market, 89 products are suitable for maize, divided into three categories: biological (47), chemical (25), and combined (17). The software operates with four basic criteria – crop ensiling characteristics, dry matter content, ensiling conditions, and primary objective. Seven-year data analysis shows that 53% of farmers choose biological additives, while the share of combined additives increased from 8% to 19%. The most common errors include underestimating the importance of dry matter content, ignoring harvest conditions, and poor timing of application. The system saves farmers 85% of decision-making time and brings cost savings of 18%. Additive costs represent only 0.3-0.8% of total silage production costs, but their impact on quality is disproportionately high. The software is freely available online at www.vuzv.cz.
