Abstract

Free stall housing is prefered in dairy cattle herds. In general there are two basic variants of bedding: deep free-stal-box bedding; „sendwich management“ – manure and straw, straw of different length and lime, plastic bedding and lime; being bedded regularly. Furthermore there are so called „high boxes“ which are bedded with mattresses or matting. In order to dairy cows be able to lie and relax comfortably 12 – 14 hours a day, two basic conditions must be met. Box surface must be comfortable and floor stuff must be soft enough, flexible and non-slip. Straw, plastic bedding, sand or saw-dust are usually used. From breeder´s point of view floor stuff is chosen with respect to the price, economic life, easy maintainance.
