Abstract

The paper focuses on the evaluation of records of daily activity, body weight and milk yield in primiparous cows of Czech Fleckvieh and Holstein cattle, bred in the years 2007-2016 on the experimental farm of VÚŽV. For each dairy cow, a curve of predicted performance was constructed and the variance of deviations of actual from predicted performance (residuals) was calculated. Based on the variability of daily records, six indicators were defined. For each trait and cow the variance of her performance and variance of residuals were calculated. The phenotypic association of these indicators with traits related to fertility, health and lifetime performance of dairy cows was assessed. Significant unfavourable associations were found between variability based on daily records and the length of reproductive intervals (insemination interval, service period, calving interval); between activity variability and number of lactations lived; between body weight variability and the incidence of clinical mastitis and hoof disorders in Holstein; and between variability in daily milk yield and milk yield in the first lactation. The daily activity, weight and yield records contain information on fertility, health and longevity of the animals, allowing their combined use in breeding for improved functional traits in dairy cattle.
