Modern technologies are now being increasingly applied in dairy cattle farming. The results of several international studies focusing on three main areas of innovation in livestock farming (automated milking systems, automated feeding systems and animal health monitoring systems) suggest that in most cases there are economic benefits to be gained from the investment. In spite of the increase in depreciation of assets and the rise in energy and repair costs, improvements in the economics of farming are being achieved, mainly as a result of increased production and reduced labour costs. Our own analysis of data from Czech farms from 2014 to 2023 shows that companies that invested more (as measured by asset depreciation) achieved higher levels of profitability in the long term. Depreciation of assets on Czech farms over 10 years averaged CZK 3,549 per cow per year. On the other hand, the highest savings in cost items usually relate to labour costs. According to model calculations based on data from 2023, their reduction by 10% at a milk purchase price of CZK 12.50 per litre would mean an increase in profit by CZK 1 265 per cow per year in Czech Fleckvieh cattle farms and CZK 1 520 in Holstein cattle farms.
