Abstract

Organic farming has grown in importance in recent years. Given the emphasis of the new EU Common Agricultural Policy on ecology and the increasing demand for organic products, its growth can be also expected in the future. In the Czech Republic, approximately 15 % of agricultural land was ecologically farmed in 2020, which was markedly more than EU average (8.8 % in 2019). Between 2012 and 2020, there were 50 more farms in the Czech Republic that raised dairy cows in an organic system. In these years, the number of dairy cows also increased by 3% and the production of organic cow milk increased by 4.4 %, which, however, still accounts for only about 1 % of the total annual milk production in the Czech Republic. This may also be due to higher production costs in organic farms. In Germany, the total costs of organic milk production in 2019 were about a third higher than the average of all farms, but purchase price of milk between January and November 2021 was only 26 % higher.
