Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the basic production, reproduction and economic parameters of dairy farming in Slovakia (SR) and in the Czech Republic (CR) in the years 2012-2014. The total number of observations over the evaluated period was 84 and 212 in SR and in the CR, respectively. The countdown calculation method was used in the economic analyses. The higher age at first calving (+13%) and slightly longer calving interval (+4%) was reached for dairy herds in SR. In both countries, the feed costs were found as the most important cost item in the calculation formula accounting 39% (SR) and 44% (CR) of the total cost. Own feed accounted for most (3/4) of the feed costs in SR, however the ratio of own and purchased feed was nearly 1:1 in the CR. Taking into account basic production and economic parameters, the loss of 520 EUR per cow per year was reached in the herds of SR in the period 2012-2014. Contrary, a slight profit of 49 EUR per cow and per year was achieved in dairy herds of CR, despite of lower price per kg of milk (-5%). Mentioned situation was determined mainly by the objectively lower milk production (-19%), based on the different breed structure of dairy herds in SR which finally decreased the total revenues from milk (-15%). Higher proportion of fixed costs per cow reflected in the increased costs per cow per year (+7%) as the second most important factor. Therefore, minimization of the fixed costs per unit of production (e.g. through higher milk yield) and rational spending of variable inputs would be useful tool to increase the profitability of milk production in SR.
