Abstract

We evaluated 59 farms with Holsteins (H) and 77 with the Czech Fleckvieh breed (C). Much of the past research, as well as recent research, on days dry has focused on effects on subsequent lactation performance. The best production in the subsequent lactation can be generally achieved when cows have a dry period length of 40 to 60 days. Across all surveyed farms were cows On 86.7 % of all surveyed farms were dry periods between 46 and 65 days. Dry cows were most often housed in reconstructed stalls (69.9%), The calving area was a part of the housing area for lactating dairy cows on 44.9% of all farms (48.1% of C farms, and 40.7% of H farms). Individual maternity pens (better zoohygienic standards) were used only on 28% of all surveyed farms, whereas group maternity pens were used on 67.6% of all surveyed farms.
