Abstract

There are about five billion hectares of agricultural land worldwide, of which about a third is ušed as arable land. As the population grows, the arable land per capita declined by 13 % between 2004 and 2018 to the current 0.18 ha. The average percentage of arable land (61 % of total land) is greater than that of permanent grassland (31 %) in EU countries. In the Czech Republic, the percentage of arable land was 71 %, whereas the area of utilized agricultural and arable land per capita was 0.33 and 0.23 ha, respectively. The number of cattle decreased by 24 thousand between 2004 and 2020 but with the concurrent decline of agricultural land area the cattle density remained similar (about 28 LSU/100 ha) in the Czech Republic. In the EU, the average cattle density is higher (34 LSU/100 ha) and there are significant differences between member States (from 7 LSU /100 ha in Greece to 145 LSU/100 ha in the Netherlands).
