Abstract

The paper is focused on description the current trend in the calf housing during the milk nutrition period. The advantages and disadvantages have been described for each way of calf housing. The essential conditions for successful rearing of calves in a group are a small number of calves (optimum 6-8 calves, maximum 10 calves), minimal differences in live weight (up to 10 kg) and age of calves, including minimal differences in the level of active and passive immunity. The appropriate age for group calf housing is up to 8 days due to the lower incidence of respiratory diseases. Calves should not be moved from individual housing to groups between 14 and 21 days after birth, when they are in the critical period of the so-called „immunological window“. At this time the calves have a lower level of „passive antibodies“ that the calf received from the mother through colostrum and at the same time its body gradually begins to produce its own antibodies.
