Abstract

The workshop (Ing. Stanislav Staněk, Ph.D. -VÚŽV, v.v.i., MVDr. Soňa Šlosárková, Ph.D. – VÚVel, v.v.i. ) focused on the practical management of colostrum nutrition and the routine evaluation of the passive immunity of calves in the dairy herds. Concerning colostrum the breeders were acquainted with a) principles of working with colostrum, b) different types of refractometers, c) the importance of regular calibration of the instrument, d) the work with refractometers and results interpretation. Concerning the passive immunity a) the principles for calf blood sampling and serum separation were summarized, b) various methods of estimating the level of passive immunity have been shown using refractometers (total protein – TP, Brix). The options for assessing the level of hygiene of devices and equipment for feeding calves were presented at the end of the workshop. The rapid protein residue test was also presented (detection of critical management points, elimination of microbial contamination).
