Abstract

On March 21 and 22, 2019, the tenth „Milk Forum“ was held at the Titanic Hotel in Berlin, this time with the motto „German milk production in international trade – chances and risks“. Given the high number of participants in all ten previous dairy forums and a number of similar previous events, it is clear that current topics are discussed. This is also true for this year. The main focus was on exports and domestic consumption of milk and milk products, on international markets, on the competitiveness and sustainability of milk production in Germany, etc. Top agrar editor-in-chief pointed out that about half of milk produced in Germany is exported. This means that its producers and processors must take equal account of domestic and foreign markets. Director of the Federal Association of breeders of cattle and pigs indicated that in 2018 was Germany exported around 130 thousand bovine animals. Current self-sufficiency in beef and veal production is around 100% in Germany. China is the world’s largest importer of dairy products, but it is also one of the world’s largest milk producers. In 2018, China’s milk production was around 31 billion liters.
