Abstract

Dry cows are generally on the fringes of breeders‘ interest. At the same time, heat stress during the dry period of the dam significantly affects the health, growth and subsequent performance of calves in adulthood and their offspring. The aim of the contribution is to analyse the influence of prenatal heat stress of fetus in utero on its development and growth, including suggestions for minimizing these effects in order to improve growth and reduce calf morbidity and mortality. The introduction of intensive cooling also for dry cows can minimize the effects of heat stress on development, growth, health, future production and reproduction, including the extension of longevity their calves.
