Abstract

Breeding of the sire pig breeds included in the national CzePig program is primarily focused on meat production. The aim of the present work was to extend the number of selection criteria of these breeds by semen characteristics and to calculate the selection response to breeding using the extended selection criteria. The work updated genetic and economic indicators of all traits and applied the general principles of the selection index theory. Current selection response in the traits of the breeding goals of the purebred sire breeds is desirable: +3.73 g of average daily gain (ADG), + 0.155% lean meat (LM) per sow and year. By expanding the number of selection criteria, the selection effect for these traits would be maintained (on average +3.44 g ADG and + 0.153% LM). In addition, the desired response would be achieved in new traits per sow and year (the increase in sperm volume by 0.85 ml, sperm concentration by 10 sperm/mm3, motility by 0.04% and decrease in abnormal spermatozoa by 0.09%, on average). At the same time, the selection accuracy would be maintained (by ± 1%) and the economic selection effect would be slightly increased (by 6%). Extending the number of selection criteria would have a positive effect the performance of sire breeds and their progeny and therefore will be consulted with breeding practice.
