Abstract

In the EU and in the Czech Republic, mostly cheap synthetic carotenoids for proper coloring of egg yolk are added to feed mixtures for laying hens. Carotenoids of natural origin are also used, but to a lesser extent. Company Selgen bred a wheat variety with increased lutein and zeaxanthin content – Pexeso. Pexeso positively affected the color of egg yolk according to the DSM scale, but the intensity of coloration was still lower than the optimum preferred by our consumers. The inclusion of Pexeso in the mixed feed increased the content of lutein and zeaxanthin in yolks, oxidative stability of yolk fats and strength of eggshell.
