The paper deals with the possibilities of measurement and prediction of methane emissions in dairy cows. It describes the use of these data in genetic parameters estimation, the reliability of breeding values and their use in genetic selection. The effects of selection for lower methane production on correlated traits in the breeding objective are outlined.
