| Abstract | The Department of Genetics and Breeding of Farm Animals at the Research Institute of Animal Science organised a workshop with several lectures on 1 September 2025. A prominent foreign expert in the field of livestock breeding, Ing. Agr. Gabriela Ciappesoni Scarone, Ph.D., who works at the INIA Las Brujas research institute in Uruguay, first presented the system of institutions involved in sheep and beef cattle breeding in Uruguay in her lecture titled „From Politics to DNA, or the Agricultural Research and Animal Breeding in Uruguay,“ with particular emphasis on how agricultural research is financed in this country. Attendees were introduced to research project providers, including those involved in international research projects. The speaker also clarified the relationships between research institutions and sheep and beef cattle breeders, as well as the principles used in breeding sheep and cattle, highlighting the use of genomics in Uruguay, along with new traits such as the sustainability index and methane production, as well as traits that have been long-selected, like parasite resistance in sheep and wool fineness. This was followed by contributions from local experts Ing. Michal Milerský, Ph.D., who, in his lecture „From the Beskydy Mountains to Uruguay, or a few words about sheep and shepherds,“ focused on sheep breeding in the Czech Republic. Mrs. Ing. Jitka Schmidová, Ph.D., then delivered a lecture titled „Does it make sense to breed sheep in an environment with wolves?“, where she emphasised how wolf attacks on sheep herds have an increasingly detrimental effect on nucleus breeding, destroying the results of many years of breeders‘ work. Over 25 scientists and members of the breeding community attended the workshop, engaging in discussions on the topics. The recording of the seminar can be found here:vuzv.cz… |
