Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the effect of teat position on the microbial quality of sheep’s milk. A herd of sheep (n = 218 sheep), consisting of Lacaune breed, Sumavska sheep and their crossbreds, were divided into three groups. First group had 12 ewes with teats positioned vertically (from 20° to 35o). Thirty ewes second group had teats at an angle of 40o to 50o. The third group of 20 ewes had horizontal position of the teats (from 55o to 65o). Individual milk samples were collected twice during the lactation period (82-112 days and 138-168 days after lambing). Total bacterial count, coliform bacteria count and somatic cell count in milk were determined in an accredited laboratory according to the Czech national standards. The values were statistically evaluated by using analysis of Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA in the program Statistica. We proved statistically significant differences in the coliform bacteria count between ewes with different position of teats.
