The number of piglets born and weaned is an important indicator for assessing the reproductive efficiency of a sow. In 2021, the pig population in the Czech Republic was at the level of 1.52 million, of which 90.5 thousand were sows. A number of factors contribute to the level of reproductive efficiency, such as the farrowing environment (technology, microclimate), the level of hygiene in the farrowing stables and during the birth, care of the sow and piglets, nutrition of the sows during pregnancy and lactation or the genetic potential of the sow, age and weight sows at first farrowing, condition and health status of the sow.
