Sales of cattle for slaughter from the Czech Republic (CR) to Austria were 28.000 in 2005, 45.000 in 2008 and almost 45.000 heads in the first ten months of 2009. Price variation is the main reason for these results. From January 2007 to October 2009 the average prices of slaughter bulls, cows and heifers in the CR reached c. 88, 90 and 81 % of prices in Austria. A comparison of prices of cattle sold to Austria from various states (CR, Germany, Slovenia, Hungary etc.) indicates comparable quality. One condition for the reduction of live cattle export and the increase of beef export is the rise in prices for all cattle categories in the CR.
