Abstract

Current knowledge about the negative impacts of early weaning of piglets, including increasing the risk of antimicrobial resistance, opens the way to a responsible search for new approaches that reduce the stress burden in piglets and thus their susceptibility to pathogens. These include breeding practices that are based on the natural behaviour of animals. One of them is the family – type of pig resring with admitting of lactating sows, which is based on the natural behaviour models of pigs. The methodology has been experimentally verified at the Swiss institute FIBL, but it has not become more widespread in practice. The only place in the Czech Republic where this method is currently used is the Biofarma Sasov in Jihlava, which has worked out the details based on its own experience.
