Abstract

The Russian Federation invaded Ukraine on 24 February. The conflict has so far had only a minimal impact on the fundamentals and dynamics of the EU milk market. The question remains, however, what effect further escalation and prolongation of the war conflict will have on the market for milk and other agricultural commodities in the medium and long term. Although the Czech Republic is self-sufficient in grain and milk, this does not mean that these sectors will not impact of the current conflict in Ukraine. The war in Ukraine can be expected to have a negative impact on global food security, with some countries already restricting grain exports. The current situation is also having a significant impact on the lower availability and high prices of animal feed, which, together with rising energy prices, may cause future price increases for livestock products, including milk. This increase in the purchase price of milk, already observed today, will certainly be reflected in consumer prices for milk and milk products. These products are only part of the items for which a significant price increase can be expected in the near future, which will have a negative impact on the economic situation of domestic consumers.
