Abstract

Sheep farmers in the Czech Republic are focused mainly on heavy lambs production. Genetic improvement of lamb carcass quality characteristics is one of the main goals of breeding programs especially for meat breeds. For that reason the in vivo ultrasound measurements of loin muscle depth (UMD) and fat and skin layer thickness (UFD) between 13th thoracic and 1st lumbar vertebra are carried out in lambs at 100 (±20) days of their age. At the same time the live weights of lambs are collected. Since the year 1999 totally 52597 lambs of Suffolk (SF), Charollais(CH), Oxford Down (OD), Texel (T), German Blackhead (GB) and Romney (RM) breeds have been scanned in nucleus flocks. Breeding values for UMD and UFD are estimated using multitrait animal model. Average UMD genetic gains per year during the period 2003-2009 was +0.12 mm/year (+0.14s.d.) for SF, +0.11 mm/year (+0.12 s.d.) for OD, +0.10 mm/year (+0.10 s.d.) for RM, +0.04 mm/year (+0.05 s.d.) for T and +0.02 mm/year (+0.03 s.d.) for GB.
