Abstract

The present article discuss the strategy of a shortened dry period and feeding the high-producing dairy cows during the last two months of gestation and about its effect on dry matter intake, body weight and condition, milk performance and basic parameters of rumen fluid and blood. Dairy cows assigned to a shortened dry period of 35 days and fed a lactation diet increased their dry matter intake prepartum compared with cows assigned to a conventional dry period of 60 days and a fed far-off diet from drying off until 21 days prepartum and a close-up diet fed 21 days prepartum. However the strategy of shortened dry period didn’t increase dry matter intake postpartum and milk yield as well.
