Abstract | Humans have used pigs for more than nine thousand years. Domestication was possible thanks to the specific characteristics of pigs, primarily their reproductive capacity, which continued to increase in captivity, and last but not least, their adaptability, which enables them to live in farming conditions. It is understandable that a lot of knowledge and experience has been gathered during that time. Marcus Terentius Varro Reatinus already in the first table. BC, AD described pig farming at a relatively high level at that time, and there are also older sources. And not only in Europe. But only with the advent of the modern age and the increase of the human population can we find efforts for intensive breeding and the understandable questions related to the solution of housing pigs. |
