The issue of using farrowing cages in pig farms is becoming increasingly relevant, as the general public is becoming more aware of the issue of animal welfare on farms. The permanent placement of sows in cages during farrowing and lactation has led to public concerns about the welfare of sows. The Czech Republic has already approved a ban on caged hens from 2027, but no fixed national deadline has yet been set for sows beyond the framework of the upcoming European legislation. The member states of the European Union are governed by their own legislation in this area. Therefore, there are differences between the individual member states in whether they are already using new systems for housing sows in farrowing facilities or still using farrowing pens with sow fixation. There are currently 3 different types of housing available in farrowing facilities. Firstly, classic farrowing cages, pens with free movement of the sow throughout the stay in the farrowing facility, and a combination of these two types, pens with temporary fixation of the sow. Group pens are also used within organic farming.
