Abstract

The local breeds are an important biological resource for the origin of new breeds or for improving the characteristics of existing breeds and are also important for maintaining of the biodiversity. The current pig breeding is mostly focused on intensive production, on a high level of reproductive parameters and production efficiency. In our country, the breeds large white, landrace, duroc and pietrain and their hybrid combinations are mainly used for breeding. However, many countries also have their original local breeds. These local breeds do not achieve high level of performance, but they have a number of characteristics that are important and because of which their breeding is supported. These characteristics include high resistance to disease, adaptability to environmental conditions and meat quality. Such a breed is also bred in the Czech Republic, it is Prestice Black-Pied pig. The article is focused on description of productive and reproductive parameters of this breed.
