Abstract

The effect of housing in cages and on litter at the beginning and the end of laying cycle during 14 days of storage on egg contamination was evaluated. Eggs from litter were significantly (P ≤ 0.001) higher contaminated by total number of microorganisms and enterococci, whereas E. coli was non significantly lower in cages. Contamination by enterococci significantly (P ≤ 0.018) increased with hens age in eggs from litter. In enterococci contamination, the significant interaction (P ≤ 0.019) of age and housing system was determined.
