Abstract | This paper summarizes the effects of two different management and feeding strategies during dry-off period on dry matter intake and milk production of high-yielding dairy cows. Shortening the dry period to 33 days and feeding a late-lactation diet continuously until calving increased dry matter intake about 4.11 kg per day while cows yielded in the average 15.84 kg of milk per day prepartum. After calving however, average dry matter intake was about 0.71 kg per cow/day greater for the control group assigned to traditional dry period 57 days (21.48 kg/cow/day) compared with cows assigned shortened dry period (20.77 kg/cow/day). The strategy of shortened dry period decreased milk yield about 3.34 kg/cow/day trough first 100 days of lactation. |
