Abstract

The study is focused on the analysis of pair and group housing of calves with regard to the occurrence of selected behavioral elements (cross-sucking and food competition) affecting health, welfare level, and growth. Two-year monitoring was carried out in one herd with 48 calves housed individually, 48 calves housed in pairs, and 24 calves housed in groups of four. The monitored indicators during the experiment were growth, difference in weight at weaning, and occurrence of cross-sucking. The difference in weight at weaning was over 10 kg in 75% of pair-housed calves and 58% of group-housed calves.
