Abstract

The aim of this methodology was to describe the method of back fat measuringt at Holstein cows by ultrasound. The experimental measurements were used to determine the average back fat height, which corresponds with the relevant class of subjective body condition scoring (BCS). The total of 1671 measurements by ultrasound and BCS (five-point scale) at 376 Holstein cows was evaluated. The back fat thickness was measured in the pelvic area dorsally from the hip joint using the apparatus SonoVet 2000, linear probe (L2-5/170CD) with frequency of 5.5 MHz. The average back fat thicknes (mm) was set based on those measurements which corresponds to the relevant BCS class.
