Abstract

Piglet losses from birth to weaning and their composition (stillbirths, crushed and euthanising piglets) were studied. The data (10201 litters from 3081 sows of five breeds on one farm) was obtained from the Czech Pig Breeders Association database. Crushed and euthanising piglet data were collected from farmer’s records. The highest average absolute losses of piglets per litter were found in the dam breeds. However, due to the larger litter size of these breeds, the relative losses per piglet born were 0.8 to 4.5 % lower than in the sire breeds. Stillbirths were the most common type of piglet loss in all breeds (41.3 to 57.8%). Stillbirths and euthanised piglets accounted for about 29-33% of losses in most breeds, with only D piglets accounting for 18% of total losses. The phenotypic trend of piglet losses is favourable in dam and sire breeds, indicating an improvement in farm management. The effect of selection could be concluded, as the piglet losses in dam breeds have steadily decreased compared to sire breeds. Piglet losses increase with litter size, especially the proportion of stillborn and euthanising piglets.
