Abstrakt

Male-male mounting does not seem to have any special function in cervids. In particular, it cannot be clearly linked to roles of a dominant actor and subordinate recipient. Intra-male mounting is likely to be a side effect of excitement and not necessarily sexual. That it is typical for young animals and it significantly decreases with age suggests that the animal needs experience to cope with changing hormonal states or that the behaviour is a form od learning.
